The Nightmare

When you wake up screaming,

But the sound comes out wrong,

And your heart is a-pounding

Like some tribal war song,

You wonder what scared you

In that dream you just had -

Just a light past the door,

But you can't go back.

So you look all around

To see if anyone heard.

There's no light outside -

Not a sound of a bird,

But you can't go back -

Not to sleep anyway,

So you jump out of bed,

And you look for a ray

Of light to shine on

That mysterious dream.

Was it some hidden fear?

Do you know what it means?

So you scratch your head,

And you pull on your coat,

Turn the knob to the door

And walk out in the cold.

You have no idea

What time it might be,

And the cold air is burning

Through your boots to your feet,

But you can't go back

Till it's all sorted out -

Why a harmless light

Made you wake with a shout.

Your smoke will soon die,

And the chill in the air

Makes that home you just left

Seem so warm. Would you dare

Put away this obsession

That will pass soon enough?

It seems so inviting

As you take your last puff.

But you need something here,

And you need something now.

There must be a reason

In this life here somehow.

Yes, there will be a reason.

No meaning you'll lack.

The light may mean nothing,

But you can never go back.
